Blaudzun and Other Highlights from Eurosonic 2011
Groningen often feels a little disconnected from the rest of the Netherlands, but for a few days every year my hometown becomes the musical centre of Europe for the largest showcase festival on the continent: Eurosonic. It also sets the stage for the Lex van Rossen Award for European music photography and the Popview photo exhibition. I’ve made a short compilation of highlights from the festival for you to listen to.
I attended solely for the music and the cameras sat at home for most of the festival, but I couldn’t resist to snap a few photos during Blaudzun‘s performance at Machinefabriek (photo above). I felt a bit bad for several photographers who missed two-thirds of the concert while chimping at their screens, as it was sincerely a magical show.
Other highlights included an acoustic performance by the Crystal Fighters at Plato, the extravagant Vinnie Who, the exceptionally inventive Květy and Oy, and of course Junip. I’m sorry to have missed Suarez, Agnes Obel and many others, but with over 200 acts to choose from you just can’t have it all.
Before I leave you with a compilation of songs by these great artists below, I would like to bring to your attention that photo gallery Noorderlicht in Groningen currently has on display I love you, but I’ve chosen rock by Olaf Heine, as well as the work of the eight nominees for the Lex van Rossen Award. (Visiting hours are from noon till 6 pm Wednesday through Sunday until February 27; entrance is free.)
